Since the doors of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography first opened, we have dedicated ourselves to supporting the creative spirit that courageously explores new possibilities in photography and to identifying promising artists, seeing those as the essential activities for a museum committed to fostering creative activity. That commitment underlies our series of exhibitions focusing on contemporary photographers. In the fifth in that series, we are proud to present the work of three nature photographers―Tetsuo Kikuchi, Takayuki Maekawa, and Meiki Lin―in Meditations on Gaea: New Horizons in Nature Photography.
Day by day, the natural world is being lost. The rapid industrialization that occurred in the twentieth century threatened the survival of many wild plant and animal species. Many have already extinct, and the face of the land has changed. In Japan, the exhibition of the Japanese crested ibis is still fresh in our memories; the destruction of natural ecosystems by human hands is a real and very familiar problem.
We homo sapiens, like other living things, were born and have evolved in nature. Yet are we not losing, day by day, our connection to the very natural environment that nurtures all life on earth? That question demands a realization or reaffirmation of the precious, even the sacredness, of the natural environment a process in which photography plays a vital role indeed. This exhibition focuses on three contemporary Japanese photographers who are passionately committed to their creative work and highly productive throughout the world, to invite reflection on the relationship between human beings and nature and to explore the significance of the nature photograph, the camera’s eye on nature.

前川貴行（まえかわ・たかゆき　1969-）    
高校卒業後、コンピュータ関連企業に勤務。 26歳の頃より独学で写真をはじめ、97年より動物写真家・田中光常の助手をつとめる。2000年よりフリーの動物写真家として活動を開始、日本、カナ ダ、アラスカを主なフィールドとして内外の野生動物の世界をテーマに撮影に取り組み、カメラ雑誌、総合誌のグラビアなどに作品を発表。著作にフォトCD 『極北の王者ホッキョクグマ』（2002年）、写真絵本『こおりのくにのシロクマおやこ』（2003年）がある。2007年10月、柏崎市立博物館にて 「The World of Wild Animals 奇跡の瞬間　前川貴行の世界」開催予定。

菊池哲男（きくち・てつお 1961-）     
14歳から独学で写真をはじめ、20歳より山岳写真に傾倒。写真家兼ライターとして 撮りためた作品を専門誌などに発表。 2001年には月刊『山と溪谷』誌の表紙を担当する。山岳スキーの分野でもアルプス最高峰モンブランをはじめ、モンテローザやオートルートなど国内外で 300ルートを越える滑降取材を行う。 著書に『美しき山稜』（1999年）、『スキーツアー』（2001年）、『白馬SHIROUMA』（2005年）がある。2006年4月、市立大町山岳博 物館にて個展「白馬SHIROUMA」を開催する。

林 明輝（りん・めいき 1969-）     
１８歳より独学で写真をはじめる。日本百名山・雨飾山を取材した個展「あまかざ り」（1998年）、日本の水風景を巡る写真展「水のほとり」（2001年）、 森林を歩き続けた個展「森の瞬間」（2004年）を、それぞれ富士フォトサロンで開催。著書に『あまかざり』『水のほとり』（1998年・2001年）、 『森の瞬間』（2004年）などがある。 2005年、国際野生写真連盟（IFWP）主催の「ネイチャーフォト・ブック・オブザイヤー」グランプリに『森の瞬間』が選出され る。
