Shibata Toshio (1949- ) studied oil painting and printing at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music before taking up photography seriously while studying in Belgium. He began to receive attention during the late eighties, after his return to Japan, for his black-and-white photographs of landscapes that have been changed by man, focusing on dams or concrete-covered land developments, although recently, he has also begun to work in color. His serene, subdued photographs present the reality of the world in which we live.
He received the 17th Kimura Ihei Award in 1992 and his works are to be found in the collections of museums not only in Japan but also around the world. Despite the high regard in which his work is held overseas, this will be the first exhibition tracing the course of his career to be held in a Japanese museum. This exhibition will present 74 photographs, from the collections of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the artist himself, ranging from those he created at the beginning of his career in the early eighties to his latest works, providing an overview of his artistic activities to date.

Whether he uses color or black-and-white, Shibata’s theme remains the same. In this exhibition, we will feature work from the 1980s to the present day, not divided by series, but rather by according to the categories of ‘Night Views’, ‘Black-and white’ and ‘Color’.
