The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum regularly presents masterpieces selected from its collection. This exhibition, Light as Medium: The TOP Collection, focuses on “drawing with light,” the literal meaning of the English word “photograph,” in exhibiting works that focus on the creativity that photographs, transcending their documentary nature, can achieve. The essence of the medium is capturing light on a light-sensitive support (often paper). Artists making use of the agency of light have created a variety of expressive formats, even trying at times to capture invisible energy in their images.
With “drawing with light” as its lens, this exhibition brings together work by twenty-nine artists, the most suitable, and most striking work for reconsidering their medium. In addition to photographs from the TOP Collection, the exhibits include works owned by the artists, art galleries, and private collectors, brought together for their appreciation.
