Since the eighties, the artist, MORIMURA has concentrated on using self-portraiture techniques to impersonate the subjects of famous paintings, film actresses, etc.  Widely recognized as being one of the leaders of Japanese contemporary art, MORIMURA will present his latest series, ‘A Requiem’, in its complete form at this exhibition.

Based on the theme of ‘the men of the 20th century’, MORIMURA considers the history and significance of the construction, war and destruction that symbolized this period.  He took old news photographs depicting the various events that characterized these times, or the famous men of the age, such as Lenin, the dictator, Che Guevara, Mao Zedong, MISHIMA Yukio, etc., then used self-portraiture to bring these back to life.  In addition to Chapter One: Seasons of Passion and Chapter Two: Twilight of the Turbulent Gods, that have been shown previously, the series is continued in this exhibition with Chapter Three: Theater of Creativity and Chapter Four: 1945 -A Flag on the Summit of the Battlefield, presenting his latest works for the first time. Comprising of approximately forty photographic and video works, including his latest addition, this series consists of a new type of self-portraiture in which MORIMURA Yasumasa confronts historical memory and we hope that you will enjoy it.
