Tabuchi Yukio made enormous contributions in many fields: as Japan’s leading alpine photographer, as a researcher on insect ecology, especially alpine butterflies, and as a student of the Yukigata, the complex patterns snow forms on mountainsides, for which he created a record folklorists find invaluable. We are thus very proud to present Natural Enchantments: The World of Tabuchi Yukio, an exhibition celebrating the centenary of his birth.
Tabuchi Yukio was born in 1905 in Kurosaka village, Tottori Prefecture, a village with a fine view of Mr. Daisen. His childhood in that magnificent natural environment, with the mountains as his playground, was a definitive influence on his life. After studying natural history at university, he became a teacher, running an outdoor study program, and began photographing mountains in earnest.
It was after he was evacuated to Maki, a hamlet in Nishi-Hotaka village(now Hotaka town), in Minami-Azumi-gun, Nagano Prefecture, in July of 1945 that Tabuchi settled upon Azumino as his permanent home. Making verdant Azumino, beautifully sited in the vast Northern Japanese Alps, his base, he devoted his life to researching the ecologies of alpine butterflies and paper wasps and taking alpine photographs.
Tabuchi, a pioneering nature photographer, observed carefully and recorded his observations on film. His direct, realistic perception of mountains as natural forms also defined the model to which an age of alpine photography in Japan world aspire.
This exhibition introduces the full range of Tabuchi’s work as well as the tools with which he created it, including his favorite camera and mountaineering equipment. It also offers an opportunity to see the roughs for his books of photographs and other precious materials. The result is a fascinating presentation of the world of Tabuchi Yukio as a photographer of remarkable sensitivity and respect for nature.
