Kawada’s The Map, a collection of photographs published in 1965, generated heated discussion for both its piercing sensibility and its quirky design. Its publication was, in fact, a sensational event that has left a lasting mark on the world of photography. Active as a founding member of the VIVO group of photographers, he later began traveling widely, gathering material in Japan and overseas. The works of this very productive artist include Los Capricbos, where commonplace scenes and the paranormal intersect, and Sacre Atavism, a collection with an essay by Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, and The Last Cosmology, which depicts the century at a turning point through images earth and sky.
The exhibition traces Kawada’s Creative life, in all its variety: the classic works mentioned above, such recent work as Car Maniac and Eureka, and his latest work as well. This year Kawada celebrates a half century of achievement as a photographer, which we are delighted to commemorate with this exhibition.
