With this year marking the 90th birthday of poet Allen Ginsberg, one of the leading figures of Beat Literature, people in Japan are rekindling an interest in poetry. In fact, the entire world is regaining an interest in this form of writing following the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Bob Dylan, whom Ginsberg praised as “the conscience of a generation.” And amid the renewed enthusiasm for poetry, one person from Japan is attracting particular attention. He is 77-year-old poet Gozo Yoshimasu, who is also accredited as a Person of Cultural Merit as well as being a member of the Japan Art Academy. In the world of contemporary poetry, Yoshimasu is a leader, along with Shuntaro Tanikawa. In particular, Yoshimasu has been working with various media, including videos and photos, and living a life in which absolutely every action he takes revolves around poetry. In 2016, a year that celebrated Yoshimasu’s work, an exceptional and major retrospective exhibit was held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. The poet’s literary works were published alongside their translations. Japan’s post-WWII poetry began with symbolism, highlighting the atrocities of war and offering insight into human nature. Although greatly influenced by T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Gozo Yoshimasu, active since the 1960s, ignited a new form of poetry with not only elements of symbolism, but also Rimbaud-like madness. With sounds of natural voices and a sense of speed associated with the American Beat Generation, his poetry gained popularity among the young. Today, Gozo Yoshimasu has distanced himself from such places as he attempts to explore unknown territory by weaving together words suggesting a life defined by a sense of crisis. This film is a story depicting a new horizon in poetry through the creative activities of Yoshimasu.

Poet Gozo Yoshimasu, born in 1939, was accredited as a Person of Cultural Merit in Japan. He is a member of the Japan Art Academy and has received many literary prizes. His approach to poetry consists of writing, reading, shooting videos, taking photographs, and traveling. Yoshimasu is one of Japan’s leading poets, whose expressions are becoming increasingly intense with age. His translated works include “ALICE IRIS RED HORSE” (NEW DIRECTIONS).
