Salgado was born in Brazil in 1944, received a master’s degree in economics from Sao Paulo University, and moved to France in the 1960s when Brazil was under military control. He completed the coursework for a doctorate in agricultural economics in the University of Paris, and proceeded in his career as an economist. In the International Coffee Organization based in London, he worked in the fields for surveys, and then at the age of 29, coming back to Paris, he started his career as a photographer.
Salgado engages himself in one theme for several years, with thorough research based on information & data from the field. His photographs tell us a story with an overwhelming power of expression “in one image”, of people who are facing severe situations such as hard labor, famine, poverty, war and many other. What we see here is the witness of the era inquiring to us, but not compelling, the question of “what is a human being”.
For his books and exhibitions he has received many international awards such as the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, and the Oskar Barnack Prize of the World Press Photo, etc. This year in 2003, he has received the International Award from The Photographic Society of Japan for his work, “EXODUS”, depicting the theme of immigrants, refugees, and exiles, which we will also see in this exhibition.
He is also active as the Special Representative for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) by contributing to the society such as offering his photographs of the Polio Eradication Campaign, etc.
