The Jomon period - Japan's longest historical era - began 16,000 years ago and lasted for over 10,000 years. It was a time when the ancestors of the modern Japanese people created beautifully patterned earthenware and impressive clay figures. In "Digging Women: Lost Item of the Jomon People," you will meet three women from three generations whose lives are dedicated to excavating these and other remains of the Jomon period. There is Ms. Otake, who has devoted the past 30 years of her life to excavating obsidian, volcanic glass integral to the Jomon people's lives. Ms. Izawa, a recent graduate who has taken her first steps into the difficult world of excavation. Finally, veteran researcher Ms. Yagi, who, along with the others, faces the fundamental question: "Why are cultural properties necessary?" Complicating the already difficult task of piecing together a historical era while navigating through the male-dominated world of archaeology, Ms. Yagi must also face excavations hindered by reconstruction work in areas damaged by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. “She Digs : Lost Items of the Jomon People” is a film about the time of the stratum, the time of the earthenware, and the time of each of these women’s lives. It is a story created by time, in which the soil links the far-off Jomon period to the present day.
