“Showa: Photography 1945-1989, Part Two” Features a Panoply of Heroes and Heroines

Almost twenty years have passed since the Japanese era name changed from ‘Showa’ to ‘Heisei’. Japan has undergone numerous changes since the end of the Second World War, from the reconstruction of the cities to the transformation of people’s lifestyles, but how did the photographers of the time record and express this in their work?

Divided into four sections, the “Showa: Photography 1945-1989” exhibition aims to introduce the tumultuous years of the Showa period through approximately six hundred photographs, selected from the museum’s collection of over twenty-three thousand. The second section of the series features the heroes and heroines who symbolized this time in Japanese history.

From athletes to actors, singers to politicians, this exhibition will show the shining heroes and heroines who were active during the period from 1955 - 1974. Chosen from the museum’s collection of over twenty-three thousand photographs, it will present these energetic heroes and heroines as they were captured in portraits by the photographers of the time. We hope that through these images of the heroes and heroines who became the faces of their times, you will be able to experience directly, the enthusiasms of the tumultuous years of the mid-Showa period.
