The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography carries out numerous activities to foster a creative spirit that will challenge the boundaries of creativity in photography and video, to discover talented artists with potential, and provide a stage for new, imaginative works to develop. Central to this is a series of exhibitions, featuring the work of promising Japanese talent, that began in 2002 under the title, ‘Up-and-Coming Japanese Artists’. The 7th in this series will be held this year on the theme of ‘the body’, and will present the work of 6 Japanese women photographers who are active both here and abroad. Despite the spread of the concept of virtual space, today we find that issues concerning the body have become a theme that has captured the minds of contemporary people and will not let go. In this exhibition we have invited some of the most influential, rising young women artists, who deal with this subject from a variety of angles at the very cutting-edge of contemporary photography, video and art, to present an image of Japan, as it is ‘now’.
