The 'TOP Collection’ is an annual series of three exhibitions, using a common theme that changes every year, to introduce the works from the collection of Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. This being the first series after the museum’s renewal-open, the theme is the ‘Heisei’ (1989-). In it, we will use works from our collection to examine the places and times in which we live as well as the way in which these are expressed.
Email, the spread of the Internet, the violation of personality rights, the protection of personal information, communication disorders, solitary death, etc., these are all phenomena that largely started during the Heisei. Methods of communication with others or the distance we place between them or objects and ourselves have changed, becoming increasingly complex. Photography, as a medium, is achieved through direct confrontation with a subject, be it an actual person, object, landscape or event, necessitating some kind of interaction or communication between photographer and subject. This exhibition will look at what the artists capture and try to express when creating a photographic work under these circumstances, while simultaneously considering the changes that have occurred in the relationships between both artist and subject and artist and viewer. It will introduce numerous contemporary works selected from the museum’s collection of over 34,000 works.
