The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will be holding an exhibition of the work of ARAKI Nobuyoshi, one of the photographers selected by the museum for intensive collection. Many of the exhibitions that have been held of ARAKI’s work, both in Japan and abroad, have taken the form of retrospectives, introducing photographs from the numerous series of works he has produced, but in this exhibition we will focus on works featuring his most important subject—his wife, ‘Yōko’. It will consist of works in which she is the subject, those that have a strong connection with her and those taken after her death in which her presence can be felt strongly.

ARAKI once said, ‘It is due to Yōko that I became a photographer’. It is clear that from the time they first met in the 1960s until her death in the 1990s she was his most important model and even after her death, she continued to have a huge influence on him.
Focusing on the theme of Yōko, this exhibition will explore ARAKI’s relationship with his subjects and consider the ‘private photographs’ that embody the essence of his photography.

The exhibition will consist of the various series of works relating to Yōko, starting with ‘Sentimental Journey’ and presenting early works from the 1960s to new works that he shot for this event. The title ‘Sentimental Journey’ comes from a privately printed book of the same name while simultaneously referring to ARAKI Nobuyoshi’s continuing life as a photographer.
