When a music CD is played back with this software using a CD drive, fragments of sounds are sampled and sent over the Internet (CD drives were standardly equipped in most computers at the time). At the same time, they are shared with other users using this software, and all the sounds are played back by switching between them. If a user shares a file, others will share files with them as well, and instead of listening to the music the user knows, it will be played back as different music. There was also a performance held having several people bring their own laptops and CDs, and mixed their sounds together.
