With a free spirit and a keen eye for observation, French photographer Robert Doisneau brilliantly captured the little dramas of everyday life. A full century after his birth, his unparalleled photographs -- witty and unabashed celebrations of humanity -- continue to resonate with people all over the world.

To commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Doisneau's birth, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography is exhibiting through May 13 a large-scale retrospective that covers this remarkable photographer's entire career. Organized with the full cooperation of the Atelier Robert Doisneau, the exhibit includes approximately 200 photographs carefully selected from over 450,000 prints and negatives.

In addition to a large selection of the Paris scenes that have become Doisneau's most representative work, the exhibition includes early photographs taken in the 1920s, delicate landscapes of the outskirts of Paris and his very personal and anti-war record of the French Resistance during World War II. There are also portraits of famous people, including Pablo Picasso, Edith Piaf and Jacques Tati, images of children, and color photos that have never been exhibited before. Together, they provide rare insight into the creative genius of this great humanist who maintained his entire life that he was not an artist.

A 192-page exhibition catalog published by Crevis Co. Ltd. with 185 black-and-white photographic reproductions is available at the museum for 2,100 yen.
Text is in Japanese only. Copies can also be purchased by contacting the publisher at info@crevis.co.jp. Payment for international orders by wire transfer only.
